Where would we be without our mums? We love Mother’s Day here at Crafter’s Companion, whether you’re celebrating the matriarch of your family or a motherly-figure in your life, you’ll want to give them something extra special to celebrate their day.
And what better way to do that than with a personal and unique handmade crafted gift! That’s why we want to help you come up with your gift for your mum with this list of five unique handmade gifts for you to choose from.
Hanging Photo Frame
Give your mum the perfect decoration to store and display her favourite memories with a hanging photo frame! Follow along to the step-by-step instructions below to create your own and personalise it to your heart's content.
Here’s what you’ll need:
- Photo frame of your chosen size
- Flowers - mine were made from foam but you can also used artificial flowers
- Clear nylon thread
- Glue gun
- I used a Canon Selphy printer for my images but you can order prints in a variety of sizes online
- Mini pegs (you can find these on Amazon or Ebay, or in most craft stores)
Step-by-step instructions
- Remove the glass and backing from the frame.
- Attach the clear nylon thread to the back of the frame using a glue gun to make it secure.
- Glue some card over the thread so that it’s stuck between the frame and the card.
- Glue your artificial flowers to the thread and cut a piece of card to sandwich the thread between that and the flower. This provides a larger surface for the flowers to be glued to, making them more secure.
- Print your photos and peg them into a clip onto the thread.
Decoupage Shell
For a decoration that can be used to keep your mum's keys, coins, and other small bits in one safe place, these decoupage shell crafts are an easy and creative gift that's perfect for all homes. Follow along below and you'll have the perfect gift to bring the seaside to them.
Here’s what you’ll need:
- Sea shell (craft shells are also available if you haven’t been to the seaside recently!)
- Decorative or patterned napkin
- ModPodge
- Scissors
- Paintbrush
- Metallic marker or acrylic paint marker.
Step-by-step instructions
- Give your seashell a quick wash to get rid of any dirt (or sand!) and gently dry.
- Take a napkin and peel off the top, decorative layer. Trim a piece large enough to cover the inside of the shell and put to one side.
- Use a brush to apply a thin layer of ModPodge to the inside of the shell.
- Lay your decorative napkin layer on the inside of the shell and apply another thin layer of ModPodge, using a brush to smooth out the sheet so it sits neatly in the grooves. Leave to dry.
- Once dry, use your marker to colour a thin border around the outside edge of the shell.
- Top Tip: When applying ModPodge, gently apply a thin layer to avoid saturating and tearing the napkin!
Making a Flower Bouquet from Forming Foam
If you want to give your mum flowers without the struggle of finding the right arrangement of flowers and colours, getting crafty with forming foam can produce a gift that’s both heartfelt and personal! Combine with an easy folded sheet of any of your favourite paper pads can create the wrapping for these gorgeous foam flowers that you can make look really realistic. Plus, you don’t have to worry about keeping them watered, which is just an added bonus!
Scratch & Reveal Ticket
Maybe your mum is more of an experience day kind of mum than a physical present-receiver. A great way to break the news that she’s got a spa day or afternoon tea to look forward to is with a ticket that has a scratch and reveal sticker to unveil her surprise. You can use our Scratch & Reveal stickers to create a unique and gorgeous ticket that you can slip into her mother’s day card, hide for a small treasure hunt, or simply give it to her to see the look on her face.
Sunflower Plant Pot Greeting Card
Does your mum love her time amongst the flowers in the garden? A sunflower plant pot card is the perfect craft for mother’s day to give her a unique message that you can personalise. The best part of this card is that if she’s not into sunflowers, you can make it with her favourite flower using our Flower Punches range to create the petals and leaves before getting creative with the colouring.
