Frequently Asked Questions
1  How does the Gemini differ from other electronic machines?
It has a wider opening which allows for the full width of A4 paper/card to be cut, The plates are 9" x 12" long. It has more power/pressure and is quieter than other models. It also has a pause and reverse function which means the plates do not have to fully pass through the machine when using smaller dies/embossing folders. The plates combination is thinner and easier to hold/work with. If your plates do become stuck in the Gemini don't worry as it does have an automatic override feature. To engage this please press and hold the Play/Pause (middle) button on the machine until your plates reverse out. The Gemini has an auto-return feature which will engage if the machine senses that it would be put under too much pressure.
2  What is included in the box with the Gemini?
There are now 3 versions of the Gemini machine and the box contents for each does vary. Please see the product details for each machine to see exactly what is included in the box.
3  How heavy is the Gemini Machine?
The boxed weight is 9.6kg. Unboxed machine weight is 7.3kg
4  What dies and embossing folders can be used?
The Gemini machine will accept all dies apart from the Sizzix steel rule dies. This is because the mouth of the machine is not deep enough for them to pass through. It will accept all standard embossing folders.
5  What materials can the Gemini cut?
You will be able to cut through materials up to 1.4mm in thickness such as, Leather, Felt, Funky Foam, Construction Acetate, Brass Metal, Mount Board, Cardboard, 6 layers of Cotton, Hessian, Vellum & Balsa wood. This will fully depend upon the die you are using as not all dies will cut through all of these materials. Each brand of die has a different depth of cutting blade.
6  What plate combination do I need to use for my dies?
We have included a standard cutting combination in the instruction booklet but as all dies are slightly different you may need to adapt this.
Each die has a different number of cutting points which determines how much pressure is applied during the cut. An example of this is an edge'able die - if used across the width of the plates it will require more pressure than if placed lengthways down the plates. This means a different plate combination may be needed for the same die if placed differently.
If you are unsure of what plate combination to use with you dies then do start with the least amount of plates and then add more as needed. You may also find that adding an additional shim may result in too much pressure being applied, if this happens then remove the shim and add a sheet of paper/card to gently build up the pressure.
7  What plate combination should I use for my embossing folders?
A standard plate combination has been included in your instruction manual but as some folders are thicker than others you may need to alter the combination to suit your folder.
8  How long will the plates last?
This will depend upon a number of factors including the usage and care of them. Each of your plates must be turned and rotated with each pass through the machine. If this is not done your plates will warp more quickly as there is a very high amount of pressure applied to them. We have tested the plates and with the correct care we have passed them through around 2000 times and they still have lots of use left in them.
Tip: label your plates so that you know which way they were last passed through.
9  Why is my machine making different sounds as the plates pass through?
It is normal to hear different sounds as the plates go through the Gemini. The machine will sound a lot deeper when you use larger and more intricate dies. You may hear cracking sounds as the plates are going through, this is also a normal sound and is due to the amount of pressure being applied to the plates.
10  Why has my rubber mat has stretched/crinkled?
Due to the intense pressure applied to your plates you will find that the rubber mat is stretched and can crinkle, it will also be forced out the back of the plate combination as they pass through the Gemini. This is normal and it will shrink back to its original size. The rubber mat is a consumable item and will need replacing, how often you need to replace it will depend its usage.
